KIRSTY MACCALMAN
Hi there!
My name is Kirsty and I am a Melbourne artist with a love of portraiture and character design. I am nostalgic for 1980s and 90s pop culture and draw inspiration from book, tv and film characters, dark humour and adventure.  My love for portraiture is based on a fascination with people and a motivation to capture the essence or raw emotion of the person.  I hope to provoke an emotional response in the viewer and do more than just recreate.
I work in a range of mediums – I love the tactile nature of traditional mediums like oil, pencil and gouache but I am also really excited by digital and the endless potential it provides for experimentation.

Freud style Greg

Oil on Canvas, 12 x 16 inch

NFS

This is a portrait of my husband Greg, during lockdown, looking a bit weary!  I was trying to emulate the style of Lucien Freud for a homage project.

Cindy Sherman

Gouache and Digital, 12 x 16 inch

NFS

This portrait was created for the Fact or Fiction competition.  I wanted to show Cindy as a master of identity manipulation and theatre, wielding the tools of her trade.

Autumn Leaves

Gouache on paper, 12 x 16 inch

NFS

Inspired by Japanese maple leaves found in my garden in Autumn.  I did original painting of the leaf and shadow in sketchbook then used it to create a repetitive design in Photoshop, which I then hand-painted using gouache.
