CAMILLE HAM
I am a mixed media artist working primarily in ink, digital media, and currently exploring textile work. I love the process of mark making and exploration of colour in every medium. I let my feelings and the medium itself guide my artmaking process from beginning to end. My work is informed by my lived experience of complex mental health and disability, and interpersonal relationships/community. I have an affinity for cute and strange creatures and character creation and use this as a vessel for my concepts, focusing on elaborate colour palettes and gestural line drawings. I am interested in making comics, illustration and video game art and hope to pursue these categories of art making further while continuing my Diploma next year.

Party, Ink and Posca Marker on 300gsm Aquarelle Watercolour Hot Pressed paper, A3. Worldbuilding series: A surreal and adorable party featuring a myriad of guests - ruminating in lockdown on the idea of communities coming together and supporting one another, and really longing for that celebratory connection.

Sanctuary, Ink and Posca Marker on 300gsm Aquarelle Watercolour Hot Pressed paper, A3. Worldbuilding series: Summarising lockdown in an exaggerated bedroom environment featuring pop culture influences. Text is ‘Prison Song’ by metal band System Of A Down from their 2000 release, symbolic of my love for the 2000s emo and hardcore movement, and incidentally aligning with current vital conversations about abolition of the prison industrial complex.

Miss Jellybean

Acrylic/wool blend yarn on burlap, A4.

A celebratory, vivid feline who is just glad to be here. Her shape is restricted to A4 dimensions and I found it effective and amusing to force a character into a strictly sized shape.

Sun Lion

Acrylic/wool blend yarn on monks cloth, 25cm x 25cm.

An earlier needle punch work, I experimented with composition and shape as I got more comfortable with this new medium.

Merry

Acrylic/wool blend yarn on burlap, A4 cropped to 15cm.

A homage to one of the many charming animal villagers from the popular video game Animal Crossing. Her powerful visage also features in a painting.

Character Design Turnaround, Clip Studio Paint.

This work is the end result of refining a single character design – Handsome Jr. – and honing their shape and dimensions to be cohesive.

Ink on 300gsm Arches Hot Pressed Watercolour paper, A3.

Painting following a ‘botanical’ motif brief. I wanted to toy with the idea of a repeating pattern while still keeping it loose and intuitive while depicting my favourite genus of flower, Viola.

Ink and Posca Marker on Raines 300gsm Cold Press Watercolour paper, A4.

A work from early in the year where I wanted to push my skills with ink, to build colour in layers and test myself to slowly refine a straightforward image.

My year-long sketchbook project focusing on the subject of worldbuilding, culminating in my three finished paintings focusing on three environments that felt prevalent to me in isolation.

Going Back For More Olive: A Meme Retrospective is an A5 zine created in Adobe Illustrator as an ode to humourous internet culture.
