Protester (Soh 僧no.120) Ink and acrylic paint on found carboard, 100 x 80cm
Benjamin Uno
This is a portrait from a suite of a hundred and twenty-one selected from crowds photographed at the S11 protests in September 2000. The portraits were divided into three groups: Protesters, Bystanders and Police. Then I assigned each a name based on the Buddhist text The Heart Sutra. Every portrait is a new ‘type-face’ or kanji (ideogram), the beginning of a new written language.
This series looks at what happens when photographic detail is re-interpreted using calligraphic and painterly gestures. My aim is to find that point where marks coalesce into a readable form; staying close to the boundary between abstraction and representation.
